Pet urine contains ammonia, bacteria, hormones, and uric acid. As it breaks down, it releases ammonia and sulfur compounds called mercaptans, which create the strong odors associated with skunks and rotting cabbage. Cat urine is especially concentrated because cats drink less water, making stains and odors more difficult to remove.

Urine does not truly dry because insoluble uric acid crystals continue to absorb moisture from the air, allowing odors to return, especially in humid conditions. These crystals can also attract dirt, making stains more noticeable over time.
